TENGEZA

Cultivating Creativity Among
Deaf Children and Youth.

Tengeza is an arts education program for young deaf and hard of hearing participants conducted voluntarily by artists and creative industry professionals as a way of community social responsibility. Since 2017, Tengeza has sparked creativity among 105 children with the help of 45 artists and volunteers. This year Deaf Aid Kenya - Isinya is the beneficiary of Tengeza, the school of 74 students between ages 6-17 will receive craft supplies accompanied with a DIY craft curriculum as a resource to guide them in their artistic exploration.

TENGEZA TRAIL CAMPAIGN

How Tengeza is conducted.

We begin the process with a donation drive for craft supplies because lack of access to materials is one of the barriers to creative production. We also recognize that there is a lot of waste that happens in the crafts production process so this is a means for you as a maker to upcycle your scraps, old or unused supplies. Supplies could be paper, beads, yarn, old boxes, tissue rolls, leather and fabric scraps, or anything you use in your handmade projects.

We accept donations all year round in Nairobi, Kenya and deliver them in April and December every year. This year’s Tengeza Trail Campaign in April coincided with World Creativity and Innovation Day where we represented Kenya to celebrate the arts among 94 other countries.

Tengeza
Toolkits

These are packaged supplies from the donations received that are sorted and prepared by volunteers participating in the project. The toolkits are prepared according to craft form, e.g there will be a package for paper crafts and another for crochet craft. These toolkits are used during in-person workshops or donated together with a curriculum to act as a guide.

Tengeza
Workshops

Before COVID-19 gathering restrictions, Tengeza was conducted through a hands-on craft workshop. Participants are divided into groups of 5-7 and taken through various craft projects. They are allowed to rotate throughout the workshop sessions to learn and experiment with different projects. Interpreters are made available to support hearing volunteers, though we are always surprised how art becomes a uniting language enabling both the deaf participants and hearing volunteers integrate.

Tengeza
Curriculum

As a way to adapt to programming without in-person workshops, we are developing a crafts curriculum to be donated together with this year’s toolkits. This will be a guide that arts educators, teachers and even the participants can use on their own without needing a facilitator from Sekoya. For each activity featured in the curriculum there will be an accompanying crafted sample donated. This year’s curriculum is being developed in partnership with Creative Waste Network, Nairobi – and activities contributed to by members of Sekoya Kreative Community.

Tengeza
Movement

Tengeza is a movement by crafters for crafters in the deaf community. It is our call to creators to pay forward their access to the arts to other creators who may be facing barriers in their community. If you would like to join the movement and reside in another city in Kenya other than Nairobi, or another East African country, we are happy to help you locate a deaf institution near you to channel your donations. If you would like to actualize the entire Tengeza process in your community, we would be delighted to train you and support you through it. Should you be interested to support the movement through monetary donation, view how to HERE.
